Happy Friday

Friday is here and I'm so excited for the weekend!  My birthday is on Monday and my parents have already sent my birthday gift, so I had the option to wear what they got me on my birthday, and my mom has sent three cards.  I'm guessing she couldn't chose and decided to buy all three, am I right mom?  Also as you can tell I am perpetually seven years old in their eyes, haha.

This week has flown by and I am so excited to celebrate Mac's nephew's birthday this Sunday, I'm October 1st, he's October 2nd and as we all remember turning 10 is a very big deal.  If anyone needs us on Sunday we'll be playing lazer tag and eating pizza with about a dozen 10 year old boys.  The rest of the weekend I hope to spend doing yoga, drinking champagne, and making pumpkin spice macarons.  If they work out hopefully there will be a new recipe to share.

Have a wonderful weekend darlings!

Best Pumpkin Beer

Last Saturday, to celebrate the first day of autumn, I went to Total Wine to pick up a couple different pumpkin beers to taste with our friends.  I have to say I first noticed the Shipyard beers because of their awesome labels, but as it turned out this Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin Ale is the best pumpkin beer maybe...ever?

You have to check it out even if you're not a big beer fan.  Unlike a lot of seasonal beers this beer is made with real smashed pumpkin in every batch and tastes like autumn in a glass.  It may be sacrilege but if you ask me this is almost the beer version of a PSL.  It's not super sweet or too spicy just great pumpkin flavor the way it should be.

The Smashed Pumpkin beer is 9% alcohol though.  So if you've had a long day at work this may be the beer for you, otherwise Shipyard makes another seasonal beer,Pumpkinhead.  Not quite as much flavor but also not as much alcohol so if you're looking for something to sip I highly recommend it.

I haven't been drinking beer for almost three months to save my ever growing waistline but through October I've decided to try new pumpkin beers every weekend!  Anyone have a favorite I should know about?

1930's Speakeasy Party

A few weeks ago my friend Kimmie turned 30 and threw a fabulous 1930's/speakeasy themed party. Every part of the party was flawless.  Excellent food, a bartender serving up prohibition cocktails, and even a belly dancer performing to Cole Porter songs.

The lovely garden party set up made us all feel like we'd stepped back in time.

Vintage finds, warm lighting, and delicate flowers gave the whole night an enchanted feeling.

I had much too much fun playing dress up.

The belly dancing was such a beautiful and unexpected touch.

I attempted to pin my hair into a bob, it lasted for about 30 seconds.

Mac in the dreamy gauze tents they set up in the back yard.

We had to try a couple of the cocktails!

The stunning birthday girl!  Doesn't her dress remind you of Ginger Rodgers?

Spiced Starbucks Pumpkin Scones

I had my first pumpkin scone years ago and I have to say it was a magical experience.  For someone who loves pumpkin and baked goods as much as I do it was the perfect morning creation.  So when it came time bake some birthday treats for my friend Lauren a few weeks ago I decided to whip up a batch of pumpkin scones inspired by Starbucks and the result was very happy.  I think Lauren and I are both openly addicted to seasonal treats and these hit the spot.  The pumpkin flavor is subtle and comes together with the spices and sugar glaze to make a happy party in your mouth.

I found a recipe from Recipe Girl and tweaked it to fit my tastes.  Now if you want yours to look exactly like Starbucks I would skip the spice glaze altogether, but if you want them to taste super amazing slather that spice glaze on there and thank heaven for it.

Spiced Pumpkin Scones:

  • 2 cups  flour
  • 1/2 cup  white sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 3 tablespoons milk or half and half
  • 1 large egg
  • 6 tablespoons cold butter, cut into cubes

Plain Glaze:
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Spiced Glaze:
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
  • pinch of ground cloves
Preheat oven to 425.  Grease and flour cookie sheet or line with parchment paper.  I vote for parchment paper.

Combine dry ingredients and set aside.  Combine pumpkin, milk, and egg set aside.

Using forks or a food proccessor (if you have one use a food proccessor and save yourself some time.  Don't try to impress us by doing it by hand cuz we all know it's a pain)cut the butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles sand or fine meal.

Fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients slowly.  Don't do it the other way around or you'll get nasty lumps, believe me.

Form the dough into a ball, if it's too wet add a little extra flour but it should be slightly sticky.  Divide the ball into two balls.

Dust cookie sheet with flour and form one ball into a rectangle.  Divide the rectangle equally in three small rectangles.  Using a floured knife cut each rectangle diagonally so you have six little triangles.

Space out the triangles since they will expand when baked.  Bake for 12 minutes or until bottoms are slightly browned.

Repeat with second ball of dough.

While they are baking combine ingredients of simple glaze then combine ingredients of spice glaze.

Once scones are slightly cooled brush with plain glaze.  When the glaze dries brush with the plain glaze.  The simple glaze gives the spice glaze something to hold on to so you get yumminess in every bite.

Then the best stept, enjoy the scones and share with friends!

How cute is the box?  I found them at Michael's.

HAPPY AUTUMN!!!

(My brother and I a few years ago at our favorite pumpkin patch)

It's here!  After months and months of waiting today is the first day of Autumn.  The season of all things cozy and happy.  A time when the table is taken over by everything pumpkin, cozy sweaters are appropriate at any time, the air smells crisp and fresh, leaves crunch under foot, and little ones spend hours planning their costumes.

I was once told by an astrologer that we thrive in the months surrounding our bithdays, both before and after.  These are our peak months.  I don't know if it's true or not but I know I am an autumn child.  This is the time of year when I come alive, things are happier, brighter, and I can't seem to keep a smile off my face.

Happy first day of fall to all the other autumn children out there!

Last Days Of Summer

Well, we're down to the last days of summer.  Autumn officially starts in a few days and I have to say I almost have mixed feelings.  You all know how much I adore autumn but we have had one heck of a fun summer.  It has been filled with bbq's, beach bike rides, and adventures like hot air ballooning, sailing, and road trips.

But the weather is finally starting to cool a bit and the air at night seems so crisp that I can't help picturing trick-or-treaters walking up my path.  So it must be true autumn is just around the corner and I am going to embrace her with open arms and a fuzzy sweater.

What were your favorite summer memories, anything you're going to miss?

Happy Friday!

I know it's not officially autumn yet but this is pretty much everything I'm excited about.  The afternoons this week have been pretty warm but the mornings and evenings have been wonderfully foggy and breezy and it is making me so excited for fall.

Tonight I'm having a couple friends over to make ricotta gnocchi, drink some wine, and catch up.  So excited to have a fun night in with friends!   Anyone have fun weekend plans?

New Items In The Etsy Shop!

You all know autumn is my favorite season and Halloween is right up there with Christmas so I decided to do some autumn tote bags for my Etsy shop.  My friend Lauren and I have always loved the art work on Victorian Halloween postcards so thinking of her I put a few designs together and I am so happy with the way they turned out.  Check them out if you want something new or need a hostess gift to a party this fall!

Would You Use A Male Masseuse?

Well I kept my promise to myself and got my second monthly massage.  Monday nights are their discount nights (all massages $10 off) so I called up to make an appointment with the woman I saw last time.  However, she was booked  so they asked if I would mind a male masseuse.  I thought about this for a couple seconds and thought why not, if I don't enjoy it I'll request a woman next time and maybe a man's extra upper body strength might help.

Having a man massage me took a couple minutes to get used to but I have to say it was great.  He was really able to work on my "concrete shoulders" as he put it and we had a great chat about our favorite places for beer, movies, and the beach.  There was nothing weird or sexual about it and his extra strength really helped loosen up my very tense shoulders.

I was really interested to learn from him that a majority of the spa's clients do not want a man to massage them.  He said a lot of men tend to worry about "liking the massage too much" and he said some women tend to feel more comfortable with their own sex.

What about you, would or have you used a male massage therapist?  Would it be less relaxing to use someone of the opposite sex?  Would your partner mind? Would it depend on the type of massage relaxing weekend or sports/deep tissue?

Downton Abbey Sneak Peak

It's probably a little sad how excited I am for the third installment of Downton Abbey to come out.  I don't know about you but I feel like I know them all and I just can't wait to see what happens.  If you have seen the first two you know they left us with a few cliff hangers.  If you haven't seen the first two, get on Netflix or BBC and watch them now! Here's the trailer, enjoy!
