Birthday Balloon Fun!

I just love the look of these photos from Geronimo Balloon Company.  They look so vintage and fun, I can’t imagine the fun they have making these balloons and delivering them.  I wish I could walk into a room full of them!

Oh, and Mac and I are getting ready for a little birthday adventure tomorrow.  I have to wake up at 4:00 am on my birthday but I’m so excited I’m sure I’ll be awake, or stay up late in anticipation and then be dead tired in the morning.   Either way I think he and I are going to have a great time!

A Little Autumn Jazz

I have been listening to versions of this song on repeat for the last two days it feels like.  This version by Kenny Burrell takes the cake though.  I just want to be in New York, in the autumn, in the 1960's ... is that too much to ask?

You Are The Cheese To My Macaroni

I got an early birthday present in the mail this week ... a few actually, my mom get's excited.  This was one of them, I mentioned it months ago from Home Arts in Cambria.  My parents remembered, picket it out, and it now lives happily on my wall.  My brother aslo got this as a wedding gift, and I've given it to friends as wedding gifts.  So perfect for any one you love or anyone who loves love.  Check out some of the other box signs, love them!
And now I'm craving marshmallows...

Dirt Bike

Mac found another dirt bike this week making a total of three living in his garage along with his CB360/Café Race project.  This one he says is just my size, or perfect for his nephew Landon’s birthday this weekend.  I can’t even conceive of being a nine year old boy and getting a motorcycle for your birthday.   Landon loves riding with Mac on Mac’s mini bike, I’m sure riding with Mac on his very own bike would just send him over the moon.  Not sure if all the details will work out but wouldn’t that be a fun surprise!

What The What...How is it Monday Already?

Well somehow Monday snuck up on us again, and as much as I love my job I'm sure it would be even better with one of these around. The weekend was busy with errands and chores, but all in preparation of the fun weekends to come this month.  Mac was busing buying and delivering furniture while I cleaned my little place, made some almost french macaroons, and bounced from task to task.

We finally had the chance to really soak in Autumn on Saturday night though, roaring fire, red wine, and a great old movie.  Couldn't ask for a better way to wind down and welcome Autumn.  Hope you all had a great weekend!

It's Autumn Baby!

Ahhhhh, I can't believe it's here.  Happy first day of autumn!!!  There are few things I love and adore more than autumn.  The nostalgia, crisp leaves, smell of fire places in the air ... oh and all things pumpkin!  I apologize for the next few months but there will be many autumn posts to come.

This quote from Something Wicked This Way Comes sums me up.

"For these beings, fall is ever the normal season, the only weather, there be no choice beyond...such are the autumn people."
-Ray Bradbury

P.S. here is where I found this great print.

Mac's Furniture On Mad Men

How exciting is it that we may be watching Mac's furniture next season?!  As you know Mac sells mid century modern furniture and he's sold three pieces to the set of Mad Men this week, isn't that fun!  Talk about the perfect time to be into mid century modern, can't wait to watch Don Draper sit in a chair I sat in ... or at least walk near it.

Feeling Cheesy?

Mac has gotten me a couple vintage fondue pots, one in this gorgeous orange and another in a cozy olive green.  I've used them for chocolate fondue with my niece but have been waiting for cooler evenings to experiment with cheese fondue.  With the smell of autumn in the air and crisp evenings, this weekend may just be the time for cheesy, gooey goodness. Who's up for a fondue party?

Mid Century The Dorris Way

I have always been obsessed with the look of the movie Pillow Talk.  I want to just live in it!  The apartments are so different, very his and hers but both are mid century perfection.  Rock Hudson's is definitely Mac's style and hers is one of my dream New York mid century apartments.  Check it out, great design ideas!

What the film if you have time, the stills just don't do it justice.

Happy Monday

Hi all, how was the weekend?  Mac and I had a great time bowling with his family, dinner with friends, and went on the most wonderful beach bike ride yesterday.

Thought I'd share this photo, don't you just wonder what started them all laughing.  I just want to step inside it, so many great people in one place.  Hope your week is off to a great start dears!

Slip Into Something Sexy

I swear there is something so sexy about femininity.  I've known a few guys that say it is so attractive when a woman can hold her own among men but still act (and look) like a woman.  And what could be more feminine than these great vintage slips.  Could you ask for a simpler way to connect you with your inner siren than satin and lace.  What do you think is femininity still sexy?

Elizabeth Taylor looking gorgeous as always.

New Hair Cut

Well lovelies, I got my hair cut on Saturday and Mom has been dying for photos so ... ta-da, bangs!  I went in for a trim, one thing lead to another, and came out like this.  I have to say I am so happy with it.  First time I've ever had bangs, so I was a little scared but I got a lot of inspiration here and my stylist Adrianne is beyond skilled so I knew she could do no wrong.  What a great way to head into fall.  What do you think?

Nap Time

It seems Mac has the amazing ability to fall asleep anywhere and I'm totally envious.  I'll be in the kitchen baking ... Mac is asleep on the couch, at my Aunt's house for a BBQ ... Mac is taking a nap in the lounge, in my parents living room at Christmas time ... there's Mac napping on the floor.  And I have to say there is something oddly rewarding about seeing someone enjoying a nap so much.  I guess there are times when nothing hits the spot like a nap.

Vintage Camping Trip

I want to go camping! me+camping=happy  You all know that I can't wait for it to be Autumn, but how good does a camping trip sound right now?   Getting out side, loving on nature a little, reading, playing in creeks, having a beer and roasting some hot dogs. I found these great goodies from around the web that fulfill all my camping fantasies.  Yes, I have camping fantasies, I think they stem from The Parent Trap with Haley Mills, I always wanted to step inside that movie.  Anyone else have the camping urge?

Mid Century Modern Living Room Idea

Happy Tuesday!  Sorry there was no post yesterday I had a crazy busy weekend and Monday.  I did come across this last night though and thought it would be such a great statement in a living room.  Can't you see it full of old records and books.  Not that I have the wall space for this at the moment, but it does give me some fun ideas.

Moment of Realization At The Aero Theatre

I had a moment of realization at the Aero Theatre last night.  For years in college my  best friend, Lauren and I would spend our weekends roaming Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, window shopping, sipping coffee, getting dinner, and watching great old movies at the Aero.  As much fun as we had with each other, we’d talk about how nice it would be to have a boys to do the same activities with.

Don’t get me wrong, I dated some really nice guys in college and have a lot of great guy friends but none of them were the right fit.  I used to bitch to Lauren, “I just want a tall, thin guy with ‘Weezer’ glasses and dark hair that I can go to the Aero with, why is this so hard to find?”

So, sitting in the Aero last night with Mac about to watch the Maltese Falcon it hit me, years later I had gotten exactly what I asked for.  I was stunned, what people had been telling me for years was right, "stop looking and you’ll find it."  Sitting there in the dark last night I couldn’t believe how it all came about and how I could possibly be lucky enough to get exactly what I asked for.   Life’s little reminder to stop stressing, let things take their course, and you’ll end up exactly where you’re meant to be.

More Pinedorado Pictures

As a kid growing up in Cambria you always looked forward to Pinedorado, the parade followed by the fairgrounds.  Winning cups in the toss, stuffed animals at the big wheel, throwing darts, eating fresh olallieberry pie, watching the magic of cotton candy being spun.

Going back home is nostalgic and sweet, BBQ and beer, catching up with old neighbors, and some of us still win cups in the coin toss.

Amazing light from Cambria's old light house now lives at the Pinedorado grounds and is operated a few times a year.  P.S. as a child I used to scream every time the train entered the tunnel.

Food and old time fun!

My brother Sean and I trying to wine some cups.

This little guy was in charge of picking up all the nuts and washers for us to throw. I wanted to put him in my pocket.

$8.00 later

My parents enjoying a beer while we act like dorks, I think they had the right idea.

Classic Cocktail-Ramos Gin Fizz

Darlings, hold on to your boots and get ready for the Ramos Gin Fizz.  Sweet Lord, this cocktail makes me happy.  For years I've listened to my parents tell stories of going to the Buena Vista Cafe in the 1960's and drinking more than a couple Ramos Gin Fizz's as they watched the cable cars turn around.  I always hesitated to try it because it has a raw egg white, but let me say, that doesn't even cross your mind when you're drinking it.  Light, refreshing, and creamy this drink is perfect for the last warm days of summer.  It's frothy and just slightly sweet, give it a try and you'll be sipping the whole weekend!

  • 2 ounces gin
  • 1 ounce heavy cream
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/2 ounce lemon juice
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice
  • 2 teaspoons superfine sugar
  • 2-3 drops orange flower water
  • Soda water

Shake it all up in a cocktail shaker over lots of ice for a minute or two. Pour into a collins glass, pint glass, or whatever ya grab from the cupboard.  Then top it with some soda water, for fizz!  Enjoy!

Pinedorado Parade Photos

Well there was a change of plans for the weekend.  My brother and sister in law, Sean and Rose, came along for the weekend.  Yay!  Mac caught the flu on Friday and couldn't come at the last minute.  Boo!  Overall though it was a fantastic, relaxing weekend.  Here are pictures from the parade as promised.  More pictures of the weekend to come.  Enjoy!  (The parade always starts and ends with the calliope, above)

Why not put men in pink skirts, go bike club!  And the scarecrow festival every October is adorable to see around town.

Cambria Garden Club, how cute are the kids in the wagon train?

The Shriners are by far our favorites, especially the guy riding the arm chair.

Yes, they drove that lift backwards all the way down Main Street. The people dancing in the pie also made me smile, so Cambria.

Perhaps some of the best entries, the "dog walkers," people playing sea kelp horns (awesome!), and the high school football team, very small town.

I kinda wanted to ride on this pirate ship.  And the parade just wouldn't be the same without mimosas and cranberry mimosas, that's mom above with her's.

Pumpkin Spice Lattes!

Pumpkin Spice Lattes are back today!!!

Ok, I have alway been girl who loves the independent coffee houses and always tries to support the little mom and pop places, but I have to say, I love me a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte.  I've tried other places but for me nothing compares.  They just feel warm and cozy, like Autumn in a cup.  And yes I am drinking one today despite the fact that it is 85 degrees outside, haha.  Happy Pumpkin Spiced Latte Day!

Space Age Sexy

I was looking at these images from 2001: A Space Odyssey and I'm floored at the impact it's still having.  Getting so much design and fashion inspiration from these. Love, love, love, the colors and lines.  The women seem cool, mysterious, sophisticated, and sexy all at the same time. Also getting some early Halloween costume ideas, haha.

Heading Home

This weekend Mac and I are taking a trip to the little costal town of Cambria that I grew up in.  With a population of about 6,000 located by the sea surrounded by pine trees it is one of the more relaxing and beautiful places to visit.  My parents still live there so we are going to spend some time with them, have some champagne, and feed the neighborhood squirrels.

Every Labor Day weekend Cambria has a celebration called Pinedorado. It's kicked off with a parade down mainstreet, then it's off to the "fair grounds" where you drink beer, eat bbq, win cups in the coin toss and watch the little kids on the rides that haven't changed since the 1949.  It's quaint, old fashioned, and feels like home to me.  Pictures to come next week.  Have a delightful weekend!

P.S. I have this suite case in light blue and white, I love it! Get this one here.

Happy September!

"Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address."
-You've Got Mail

This quote just makes me happy and is so true, if I had the means I would send you all bouquets of newly sharpened pencils.  It's the first day of September and I've already been getting that Autumn feel.  Autumn is by far my favorite season, where Mac's is summer.  It's this time of year when Mac starts saying "not yet" every time I mention the change in the air.  He may not want summer to end but I can't wait to welcome Fall.  Have a wonderful first day of September!

P.S. Mac and I are total nerds and will send each other quotes from this movie via text throughout day.
